In my reading of, "What Is It Like To Be Married To Me: Dangerous Questions", I've asked to set a goal and a Marriage Committment Statement. After reading some very awesome statements from other women, I chose to use the word submissive as my acrostic for my marriage statement. But before I share that with you and the implications of such a statement I want to share another thought or question that was asked.
What would my husband say about me at my funeral? Wow! What a loaded questions! I know what I would like him to say:
"Melinda was my best friend, lover, companion, support, encourager. We had a love that was open, honest, and passionate about serving God. Melinda encouraged my walk with Christ and supported me as I learned to be the Godly man God desired. She was forgiving, loving, and unwavering in her faith. In the early years of our marriage she was stubborn and set in her ways, but the Lord taught her how to be patient, loving and kind which made her more beautiful each day."
I do not believe my husband can state all of those things at this time in my life. Sometimes what I put out there where others can see isn' what's always going on in the inside. An example would be forgiveness where forgiveness is not earned. I try to respond in a Godly manner when it comes to people doing me wrong, but sometimes it's hard to let that go in my heart of hearts and I find bitterness welling up. However, when I sense that bitter taste in my mouth God's word says to pray for our enemies and those who do us wrong. Contrast to this statement, I have found myself reading the Psalms that say that they will get their's in the end. That's probably not the comfort that I should be seeking, but instead I should be praying that hearts will be changed (including my own).
Anyway, I have a lot of praying and leaning on God to do to fullfill the picture of wife that the bible witholds.
Proverbs 31:30 "Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised."
1 Peter 3:1 " Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that evven if some do not obey the word, they,w ithout a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives."
1 Timothy 3 :11 "Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things."
I have a goal to strive for, but I'm sure not there yet. So, how am I gonna get there? Prayer, petition and being in the Word. So now comes my Marriage Committement Statement. Now, I'm putting this out there so others can keep me accountable, but also so others my think about their own Marriage Committment Statement. The focus of a Committment Statement should be based around the following thoughts:
What is currently important to me?
What do I put ahead of my husband?
My answers: My pride, my needs, our child and others who might need me. I have it all wrong! God meant a husband and wife to be one, not just by signing a peace of paper, but also be the way we live our lives. We should be one in thought, one in serving God, one in raising our child, one in all decisions made in our lives. We cannot be made one without God bridging the gap of our differences and allow Him to lead in our marriage! Since I can only change me, this is my goal/Marriage Committement Statement:
Supportive
Unwavering
Blessing
Meek & Mild
Intimate
Servant minded
Seeking God's Will
Integrity
Vibrant
Encouraging
God has a lot of work to do in my life! My prayer is that I will listen and heed his calling to be a Godly wife. I chose the word submissive, because this is something I do not do well. I'm a bit outspoken (as if you didn't know that) and I have my opinions about everything. However, I believe that God has given my husband the knowledge to make sound decisions, whereas, my emotions get the better of me.
I looked up some bible verses that had the word in them and want to share those with you. I hope you look them up to. Tomorrow I will go into more detail about what submissive means to me now that I have read these verses.
1 Corinthians 14:34
Hebrews 13:17
1 Peter 2:18
1 Peter 3:1
1 Peter 3:5
1 Peter 5:5
Dear Lord,
Help me to seek you in all that I do. Help me as I dig deeper into your Word to have an open heart to hear your calling and that what I'm learning will not just be words, but will be etched in my heart. Thank you Lord for my husband! Thank you for his gentle and patient spirit. Thank you for his love for you. Help me to be the wife he deserves and the wife you desire me to be. Lord guide me in your way today as I head out into the world that I will be a light for you!
Amen
